Beginning
The humble beginnings of Jami Masjid Smethwick began in a 2 bedroom terraced house on Mafeking Road, Smethwick. Following a number of years of hard work and dedication the masjid was able to acquire a factory building during the early 1980’s. Since then this has been the home for Jami Masjid for the past 30 years. Alhamdulillah in 2010, we were able to acquire the adjacent factory unit and double our ground floor space.
Since the masjid’s creation, it has become a focal point for the Muslim community. Over the years, Muslims have used the masjid for events, meetings, lectures, studies and community and educational purposes. Jami Masjid Smethwick is focused on bettering the lives of the Muslim and non muslim community by providing instructions according to the Quran and the teachings of the blessed Prophet Muhammed (SAW). We work with the local schools, authorities, and organisations to ensure the true message of Islam is delivered.
Masjid Design
The masjid itself has a layout
spread across only one floor. There are two Main Halls for prayers which can
easily accommodate around 300 worshippers at any one time. In addition there
are separate ladies entrances, rooms and halls for use. The acquisition of the
adjacent factory building has recently provided us with extra separate
accommodation for visitors to the mosque to learn about Islam and Muslim life.
The ground floor also has a community hall, an Islamic library, and educational
classrooms all equipped with the latest teaching and presentation facilities. On
special days like Eid, when demand is high, all the Masjid rooms and halls are
used for prayers providing accommodation for 800 people.
Future
Our main aim for the expansion project is to provide a comprehensive prayer Musallah with funeral services, as well as to deliver excellent Islamic educational, social and wellbeing programmes for of all the community. We intend to do this by building a purpose built masjid and community centre with modern facilities and technologies.
